Luke’s Ukes #15: The Mary Ellen Carter (Stan Rogers cover)

So after a rather-longer-than-I’d-like hiatus, the next installment of Luke’s Ukes is a classic that sounds best, undeniably, on the 12-string guitar. Arranging it for ukulele, even a uke with a couple of “bonus strings” for added oomph, takes some of the kick out of it. And yet Stan Rogers deserves to be recognized, and heard, more often than he is. He’s a hero of Canadian folk music in more ways than one, and I hope (more than I hoped for, say, Michael Jackson) that I’ve done him justice here. So here’s The Mary Ellen Carter.
